David was once a good student until something terrible happened in the middle of his school life, bullying. Nevertheless as the situation progressed, it took a major toll in his studies but, he had a solution to his problems.

During the first few weeks when David begun his first year in a new secondary school, a new environment. Things were working well and he was very likable by almost all of his classmates. Everything was almost fine except for a group of students who found him a little too irritating and very arrogant. They watched how David progressed throughout the weeks until they got very annoyed, they decided to take things into their own hands.

The group of bullies first started making fun of him and they took every opportunity to do him bad. Verbal insults and vulgarities came in and David felt very vexed for a period of time. Hoping that he would be enraged and hoping that he would confront the bullies in a fight, the bullies continued their actions, hoping to seize a chance to report him to a teacher.

Unluckily for the bullies, David was wise. He remained calm throughout the whole situation. Instead of exacting revenge on the bullies, he told his parents about the situation he was in and his parents wrote a letter to the school, explaining and informing the teachers.

As harassment and vulgarities is against the school rules, the discipline master came into the situation and had each of the bullies' parents informed. They were also made to sweep canteen floors on odd days for 3 weeks. Moreover, they had to stay back in school for detention classes on the tuesdays and wednesdays.

As for David, he is no longer afraid and is able to fully concentrate on his studies.
Prevention is better than cure.

In every school there will always be cases of bullying. Frequently, the bigger pupils tend to pic on the smaller sized ones. These situations could be disastrous and it could lead to many possible things but also, sometimes bullying occurs in every school where sometimes the troubling situations came about when the victim started the trouble.

Normally in tests or examinations, the mischevious and lazy pupils would risk getting caught and take the easy way out, cheating. They would either bribe or even threaten the pupils whom they would ask to copy from. The bullying situations start when the pupils reject the cheaters.

The bullies would first start off with verbal insults, vulgarities mostly. They too would make fun of the victims and if the victims refuses to take action, they would be bullied even to the extend of physical abuse. If the victim is to frightened and refuses to inform teachers or parents, things could be worse.

However if they informed someone, the bullies would be in deep trouble. After the incident, there is a possiblity that they would still harass you to an extend of fights.

If the victim remains frightened still, the bullies would be persistent and they would disturb and irritate the victim. This situation could even lead to the extend of extortion of money.

So, the solution to these troubles is to always inform someone, and never be afraid of doing so as if the bullies are persistent, their punishments would be greater and in the future they would live to regret their actions. It is important for your child to be able to enjoy their childhood life.

People want to seem tough and strong, they more likely want to be popular, and attract girls to think that they are tuff. Some people bully to attract attention of people or result their friends in laughing, and they may even enjoy themselves. Sometimes people bully because they dislike that person's attitude or because he is different from others.

Source: http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/school_jobs/bullying/bullies.html (2 paragraphs only)

Two of the main reasons people are bullied are because of appearance and social status. Bullies pick on the people they think don't fit in, maybe because of how they look, how they act (for example, kids who are shy and withdrawn), their race or religion, or because the bullies think their target may be gay or lesbian.

Some reasons why people bully?

They like to dominate others and are generally focused on themselves. For example spreading a rumor and teasing that same guy constantly, just to make a joke out of it, and see what happens.

For some people, when bullies feel stressed, angry, or frustrated, thinking that picking on someone else can be a quick escape. It takes the attention away from them and their problems. Some bullies learn from firsthand experience. Perhaps name-calling, putdowns, or physical force are the norms in their families. Whatever the reason, though, there is actually no excuse for being a bully.

-Frustration - a child is impaired in some way and is frustrated and resentful because the source of their difficulty has not been identified.

-Bullying is the general term applied to a pattern of behavior whereby one person with a lot of internal anger, resentment and aggression and lacking interpersonal skills chooses to displace their aggression onto another person, chosen for their vulnerability with respect to the bully, using tactics of constant criticism, nit-picking, exclusion, isolation, teasing etc.

Some people can’t interact with others in a non-violent manner and they are easily pissed upon hearing nasty stuffs about them.

Child abuse includes the following conditions:
-Child sexual abuse
-Pedophilia
-Physical abuse
-Child neglect
-Emotional neglect
-Failure to thrive

Child sexual abuse includes any activity that uses a child to create sexual gratification either in you or others. There is a way to distinguish normal touching from child sexual abuse. The key is the intention by the perpetrator to be sexually aroused by the activity or the intention to create sexual arousal in others. The intent to use children in any way to create sexual arousal is illegal. This is criminal behavior that is aggressively prosecuted.

Child sexual abuse can include a wide variety of activities.
Activities can include any conventional adult sexual activity with a child. Also included are acts such as touching the child's genitals or fondling with the intention of arousing sexual feelings.
Child sexual abuse includes prolonged kissing, cuddling, French kissing, and excessive touching. Looking at children either with or without clothes with the intent to be sexually aroused can also be included.
Photographing, videotaping, or filming of children with the intent to create sexual stimulation is a form of child abuse as well.

Physical abuse
Excessive physical discipline is harmful and dangerous to children. (Shaking, dropping, or throwing the child against hard surfaces). Any severe beating with an object, forceful shaking, submersion in water, and other forms of intentional infliction of pain are inappropriate and criminal behaviors. Come on, they are just children; treat them with some care and concern.

Why they bully?

People who bully do so for many reasons. They may set out deliberately to bully and feel pleasure in bullying. It may give them a sense of power. A person who bullies may not necessarily lack self-esteem or be insecure; many have average or above-average self-esteem. Their temperaments are more aggressive and they lack empathy. This can be caused by poor parenting and a lack of good role models, or be a
personality trait that needs fostering in a positive direction.

• They may feel upset or angry or feel they don’t fit in.
• They want to seem tough and show off.
• They may get bullied themselves by family members.
• They’re scared of getting picked on so do it first.
• If they don’t like themselves they may take it out on someone else.
• They think they will become more popular.

Maid abuse

“Maria go do the dishes, and after that wash the clothes and dry them well”! Mr Gay screamed at me. I was always shouted at by my employer, Mr Gay. I never did get any respect ever since I set foot in this house to work.

I worked as a maid I desperately needed money as my family depended mostly on my earnings. I tried to make everything perfect to be in the employer’s good books and even went the extra mile hoping that the employer would notice my hard work and hopefully give me a raise in my salary to help support my family more. I would clean the house exceptionally clean, obediently obey all the orders of Mr Gay no matter how tough they were, cooked his favorite food and had no complains about the work I was doing. But to no avail.

Instead of gaining attention from Mr Gay I was treated very badly some nights when there was not enough food he would not serve me my share of the food and leave me to starve. I was also forced to sleep outside the house due to the in sufficient space inside. He also forced me to work till very late in the night. I did not want to complain at all as I wanted to earn money as soon and as quickly as possible.

One day, my employer was complaining about the dishes not being washed properly I claimed that I dint not notice that they were not properly washed. He suddenly went into a rage and poured the cup of hot mocha he held in his hands onto me. It scalded my skin and I was in great pain I rushed to the medical box to apply medication to the wound. That night, I waited till everyone was asleep, I packed up and rushed off to the maid agency. I decided that my tolerance was at its peak and I had to put an end to this. When I arrived at the maid agency it was already closed, as I was extremely tired I decided to take a short nap along the steps of the agency.

In the morning I explained everything to my agent and pleaded to switch my employer. He was astonished at the amount of suffering and abuse that I had endured. He stood up banged the table and said this very surprising words “I am going to sue Mr Gay!”

Maid abuse is a very frightening issue as the maids could be terribly treated and no one would know. Everyone, even maids should be treated equally and employers have absolutely no rights to abuse them at all. We have to take immediate action to prevent further abusing of them. In my view, I would sent the agents of the maids to visit the maids employers homes to inspect the situation that there are living once every 3 months that way if the maids are being abused we would know right away.

Singapore accused of maid neglect

Female migrant workers in Singapore face what amounts to forced labour due to a lack of legal protection, US-based rights campaigners say.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said domestic workers were overworking, employers did not allow the maids to have food, employers also refused to pay them and denied them from social contact.

Maids working throughout South East Asia complain of abuse.

Some 150,000 women work as maids in Singapore, mainly from countries like Indonesia, Philippines, and Sri Lanka.

The maids trapped in apartment blocks, beaten, sexually abused, killed or driven to death by their employers.

They believe such abuse is widespread in Singapore. In the past six years, at least 147 domestic workers have died in the city state.

Excluded

The rights group interviewed 90 people Maid to Order - Ending abuses against migrant domestic workers in Singapore.

HRW argues that Singapore is failing to comply with international law.

"A system that excludes a class of workers from labour protections, leaving them to work for 16 hours a day, seven days a week, for pitifully low wages is one that demands serious and meaningful reform," it says.

But Singapore's government denied it was exploiting the maids.

"On their own accord, FDWs [foreign domestic workers] prefer to work in Singapore due to its favorable conditions unlike their homelands or other countries.

"Contrary to HRW's report, the majority of FDWs enjoy meaningful and safe employment in Singapore. An independent poll by Singapore Press Holdings in Dec 2003, revealed that over 80% of FDWs were happy to work in Singapore," the Ministry of Manpower said on its website.

Harsh conditions

One domestic worker complained of overwork.

"Sometimes employers want the maid to clean until 2200 or midnight and to start working again at 0600," she said, this would cause the maid to have insufficient sleep which is very bad for the health of the maid.

Another maid told HRW: "Sometimes there was not enough food... They bought food from outside, but not for me. When angry, [the employer] would throw my food in the rubbish... I was very scared. My employer told me, 'Tomorrow you have a punishment, no eating.'"

Foreign and domestic workers in Singapore at present have no right to any time off. As of next year, employers will be obliged to give them one day off a month or financial compensation.

But the report says the women should be given the same rights as other workers in Singapore.

The authors’ claims that Singapore is by no means the worst offender in the region, but they argue that this tightly controlled city country could improve conditions very easily and quickly, giving the women greater control of their lives and to prevent further abusing of the maids.

Because of the darkness in my childhood, I had a deep appreciation for life. I was fortunate enough to turn a tragedy into triumph. Childhood should be carefree, playing in the sun, and not having nightmares in the darkness of the soul.
I had to finish the dishes on time; otherwise I would not have breakfast. Since I didn’t have dinner last night, I must make sure I get something to eat. I heard her stomping down the hallway towards the kitchen. I dipped my hands back into the scalding rinse water. It was too late, she caught me with my hands out of the water.
I felt a sudden forceful blow on my face and I toppled to the floor. I acted timid, nodding to her threats. I was famished and desperately needed food. Another blow pushed my head against the wall. Her sadism was satisfied and she stormed out of the kitchen.
I breathe a sign of relief. The act worked. I said to myself, “she can beat me all she wants, but I won’t let her take away my will to somehow survive.
I finished the dishes, then my other chores. For my reward I received breakfast which was leftovers from my brothers’ cereal bowls.
I rushed to school, panting at the top of my breath. I met the nurse when I passed the school’s clinic and she examined my body which was badly bruised. She began to question me like before, and I just repeated what my mother told me, that I accidentally fell.
During the years before I was abused, my two brothers and I were blessed with the perfect parents. Our every whim was fulfilled with love and care.
I recalled looking out of our living room bay window on a clear day, to gaze at the lovely scenery, waiting for my father to come home.
My father was a full-time business man and came home late. He did this for us to enjoy a good life. My mother was a mother full of surprises and was the dominant person in our family. She always took command in our family matters. She was meticulous at housework and everything she touched turned to gold.
The most memorable thing was when my mother and father took three of us to watch the sunset and all of us held hands. I still remembered the smooth breeze that blew through my hair. From above, I felt someone hug my shoulders. I thought it was my father. I turned around and was astonished to find my mother holding me tightly.
My relationship with my mother drastically changed from discipline that developed into a kind of lifestyle that grew out of control. Sometimes she may come back home, drunk, and just vent her anger on me. She always played her games with me to the point of death. I used to ask her the reason for her treating me like this, but she just told me that I had been a bad boy unlike the old times.
I loved it when dad was home; It meant to me no beatings, no screamings, and none of mother’s favourite games.
In school, teachers often pity me and knew that I had some family problems. I often steal food as I was not given breakfast, resulting in complaints from my classmates’ mothers, resulting in some more beatings.
My fantasy included the family living happily after, and I sometimes stare into space and imagined the old mother I had.
Weeks passed by and mother’s games seem to change into more severe, and one day, as I was doing the dishes, I exceeded her time limited. This time, she took out a knife and threatened me that I do it quickly or the outcome will be worst. Knowing that I had never accomplished mother’s expectations, I just took it as an act of intimidating me.
Time slowed to a crawl and as she shouted for me to finish the last dish, she stepped forward, unaware of the knife pointing at the front, it jabbed my stomach. The pain was excruciating and I crumpled to the floor and my world turned black.
The next thing I remembered was mother helping me with my wound. She told me that it was an accident, but I doubt it was. At first she began to bring me back to the past, talking about the times when we as a family were together, but her toned changed suddenly back into the same hostile manner, and replied that it was due to me not behaving myself did things started to change. I hated myself after all that nonsense and sometimes I may stare at the mirror, finding me repeating over and over again that I was a bad boy.
After that knife accident, I returned to school. The nurse who often treats my body and the teachers eyed at me with concerned and they got into the situation and found out the truth. At first I was very intimidated and I thought after calling my mother and the cops, I would receive more treatments.
After a few minutes of waiting which seemed to last forever, a police officer came and questioned me.
“Don’t be afraid kid, we are hear to help you, we just need to find out the truth,” He said.
“But that’s the truth, I just ran into a sharp edge,” I answered, looking terrified than ever.
It took a few moments of repeating and silence did I then reveal the actual thing that happened. I saw tears running down the nurse’s cheeks.
That was the day when I was sent to a place where I was taken care of, without mother.
When I was in a car, my heart was filled with a mixture of happiness, freedom, and sadness. I was finally free from the place of solitude and torment, but I was set apart from my father whom I had loved. Even though he sometimes was not there for me, but his presence gave me a sense of security and happiness. He often told me, “Don’t be like me son, make things for yourself, do your best in whatever you do. Don’t let that mad woman stop you.” That changed my attitude towards life and the past seemed to fade away.
Being taken care by my foster parents, I still had wet dreams and still traumatized by my past happenings, I struggled to make things out of myself and get rid of the past.
Life for me changed when I was 37years old and married to my wife, Mary. We had a child and I promised myself to make the best for him, ensuring that I would not give him the same experience that I had when I was a child. I worked as a speaker, going round to speak to different groups of abused children and make a change in their lives, wanting to break the cycle of child abuse. Sometimes one of them of the group of children may speak out, saying that I had no right to say about them. I would share with them my stories of the past.
It was a few months time did I then thought of going back and confronting my mother, and at the same time, visit my grandmother. I spoke to my younger sibling, Tony. I did not talk to him for many years and when I met him, I gave him a warm hug. I was shocked to hear that my other siblings were left abused by mother. Fortunately, some of them are finding a job to escape mother’s games.
I then know how fortunate I actually am, compared to my other siblings.
I went to my grandmother’s house and stayed there for three days, and later set off to my mother’s place. When she heard that I was to go to my mother’s place, she fumed with rage, and start bringing the past of my mother to me. I realized that my mother not only had strained relationships with many people, but also had disputes with her own mother.
I then asked the reason for my mother’s behaviour, she then left the table I was at and did not spoke for a few long hours. As I went deep into the situation did things fall into place. My grandmother actually treated her daughter harshly, leading to her treating me the same way. My heart sank. I was afraid I might do the same thing, and one day just go crazy with me abusing my beloved son. The hatred in me seemed to draw to grandmother instead of mother. But I knew no one else was to be blamed, and I can make a difference.
With a bouquet of white flowers, I went to the door step of my mother’s house. I felt a lump in my throat rise up. I pressed the door bell, and surprisingly, two smiley faces went to greet me. It was my two brothers, one of them whom I met days ago.
“She’s not hear anymore. I’m afraid she passed on, so did father,” My elder brother said, and went inside his room, coming out and handling me a badge from father.
“He wanted you to have it.”
Everything went to sudden. As a family, we went to visit their graves.
“He was a peaceful man. He shouldn’t die so quickly.” I murmured.
What had been done cannot be undone. I wanted to spend time with my father. I wished that I could just have one day with him, at my favourite river, spending quality time with him, talking about the present and not the past.
After my parents’ death, things began to fall into place. I seldom had night sweats and I’ll still remember the great man who may have been unsuccessful in his life, but to me, was still the greatest hero. He is my father.

Idea from the book, "the child called it" by David Pelzer (not the whole passage! Because the book is very very thick)

Child abuse can be Physical, sexual or emotional. Neglect is also a form of abuse. But things is why do people abuse their kids?
One of the causes is that the parent is very stressful, maybe becuase of his or her past happenings. Another cause for the parents doing so is may be that he or she is abused before.
Some parents are often unable to control and let go their past happenings and react on their child. A person that has been abused is likely to abuse his children as well.
The second reason may be that they hate their child because of his or her appearance and did not plan for him to be born.
Premarital sex is quite common in other countries and most people who have sex before marriage most likely did not think of the consequences of having a child or to take care of the child. The child may be borned ugly, disfigured, or retarded, causing the parent to be distress and hate the child if the parent is not patient enough and is unable to accept the fact of his child being different compared to other children. The parent may not even care about having responsibilities over the child's bringing.
The next point is maybe due to the parents disciplining the child and exceeding the line of discipline and going to more serious and severe ways of disciplining the child, leeding to abuse.
The child they are disciplining could be very naughty, mischevious, playful and make mistakes as they are still young and have not received any parental guidance. There is a saying, spare the rod and spoil the child. Discipline is a must but parents should not alwasy use physical pain to discipline the child but instead, speak to the child constantly, reminding the child of his mistakes. Parents should be careful of their actions and not take severe disciplinary action and develope it as a habit.
As some parents are at work, they may do business and drink with other people. Some come home, drunk and abuse their children. When people are drunk, they do not watch their actions and get too emotional sometimes.
Understanding the root causes of abuse can help better determine the best methods of prevention and treatment.
